Here at the Redwood City Catholic Worker House, often we extend hospitality to families. Currently a family which includes a couple of young girls is staying here. This weekend, when it has been so rainy here in the Bay Area, at one point the mom was reading to her girls in the living room.
She read out of the book, "Who was the first President of the United States?"
One of the girls replied, "George Wilson!"
The mom replied, "No! That's not his name!"
The girl contended, "I can't say his name!"
From the kitchen, I called, "When you want to clean your clothes, you put them into what?"
The girl responded, "The washing machine."
I continued, "OK. Now take off that second word."
She asked, "Machine?"
I explained, "Right, since that's not part of his name. You've just got 'Washing.' Now, for the second part of his name, when you've got 2,000 pounds, what do you call it?"
The mom added the clue, "It's three letters long."
The girl exclaimed, "Fat!"
